Character Name: Reno
Series: Final Fantasy VII
Age: 29
From When: Beginning of Dirge of Cerberus
Warden Justification:
He has a natural talent for reading people and a situational awareness that was honed and enhanced by his extensive training as an elite intelligence agent for a global superpower. He likes to have a plan of action, but his greatest strength is his adaptability and mental agility, even in the face of death, world annihilation, being hunted for treason, being hunted by the planet itself, dealing with criminals or making deals with criminals. He has seen the best and worst of man and nature, and has always faced it head on, and has always had the backs of his team.
Item: ShinRa issue smart phone. Will place a pin where-about inmate is at a la google maps and give walking directions. When encountering interference, it will keep moving the pin around all over the place. If you've ever played Pokemon Go and started teleporting around, it's like that.
Abilities/Powers:
Magic: in order to use magic, he needs materia. Materia are slotted into his primary weapon, his mag-rod. Most Turks are generally armed to the teeth, and at any given point in time he will have other weapons hidden on him.
- Thundaja: This materia is his baby and he has complete mastery over it. Able to channel a steady stream of voltage through his mag rod, and change the voltage at will throughout combat. Can put out as much energy as a lightning bolt, but he can't sustain an out put of that level due to the mana drain.
- Hastega: Very little mastery over this materia, as such it's a huge drain on his mana reserves. Used judiciously to reposition in a pinch. Allows him to move at inhuman speeds.
- Cure: Likewise minimal mastery over this materia. Heals minor/superficial injuries and mild rejuvenation/analgesic. Cannot heal lacerations, but may be used to staunch blood flow. Can hasten recovery time of sprains and hairline fractures. Cannot repair nerve damage or cure infections.
- Agility: This man is fucking agile. Noted in canon as the fastest of the Turks, and has scaled vertical walls. Built for speed. He hits hard and he hits fast to make up for his poor defenses. Reno plays dirty in fights.
- Bear in mind this man has the in-universe equivalent training of a Navy Seal, called the Turk Academy. He's used to high-pressure, high-stress, and high-emotion situations, and tactically navigating them and combat without losing his cool.
Wardening Strategies and Philosophies:
Reno will have the mental agility to roll with what is presented to him, but he will still investigate to confirm intel given to him rather than purely take things at face value. Reno is very used to having agency through intel, and will seek to gain as intimate of an understanding as possible of his situation and surroundings.
Reno is an adaptable warden and will manage with whatever assignment, so he can be well utilized to manage anyone temporarily if there are no other better alternatives. Bear in mind that he is very unused to being a caretaker, and while he can handle the public and deal one-on-one with training a new operative, he's used to dealing with someone that understands and is expected to uphold a level of professionalism, so it will take some time to adjust to this new role with dysfunctional civilians.
He will prefer to juggle temporary inmates, as this means there is not enough time for an inmate to pry into his own inner world, but it still gives him enough time to get used to names, faces, and habits to help keep his fingers on the pulse of the barge. He will need coaxing and some time before he is able to let himself be more emotionally vulnerable and utilize his strengths to their fullest potential.
Reno's strategies in dealing with inmates will stem from a couple of core tenets: the consistency and accountability of his training as a Turk, and how he interacts with the world, himself(he listens to actions, and everything is in shades of grey). While he can adjust the means by which he applies these strategies as necessary, they will still echo those two values. He's also aware of his own strengths and weaknesses due to each Turk finding their own niche in the team, and if met with an inmate whose needs clash too hard with his methods, he'll instead turn his time with them into a breather for the two of them and simply maintain stability.
Reno isn't one to talk through feelings or lecture. He can, but verbalizing vulnerabilities and emotions is his weak point, and while he knows how to manipulate these things for his job, the objective here is to heal, not to acquire or conquer. He will struggle with switching those gears, as it will reveal his own vulnerabilities by proxy, and he's extremely cagey about his own emotions to the point that he apologizes through actions rather than words, even when among the Turks. He also tends to play things by ear while upholding a loose itinerary that can be adjusted on the fly. He will best assist inmates by inclusion and example, so Reno will prefer to pull or push them into situations that will test their boundaries, and let them figure their way through it with him there serving as a sense of security and safety. Or he may simply let them watch him handle situations to build confidence. He treats most mistakes as no big deal to create a sense of ease and relieve pressure, but will quickly swoop in to interfere in a situation that appears to be spiraling. His quick wit lends to an ability to redirect if possible, and his training and combat means he'll be capable of handling or restraining a number of inmates should worse come to worst.
While Reno doesn't like to open up verbally, he will still gladly chatter and gossip on matters and let someone vent. The world is not black and white, and the Turks know this best of all. People do bad things for good or bad reasons, and Reno is usually quick on the uptake of uncovering a person's intentions. Reno does have his own boundaries and sense of justice, but he can easily brush off many atrocities, and will thus pair well with more dangerous inmates. He'll be largely unphased and stand on similar ground to them while helping them navigate their own issues. He also has the fortitude to uphold and enforce staunch boundaries in subtle ways.
Reno is the most likely of the Turks to give people chances based on the sum of their actions and intentions, and his own intentions with pushing them in a given direction, as we see Reno being willing to let Evan approach Rufus with a nail clipper that has a little blade in it inside of his pocket. It is a calculated risk that initially looks to have been thrown in Reno's face, but it turned out that Rufus was the one who directed the situation, and Reno's judgment call was quite correct. Even if he bore a grudge, once it's sorted, it's business as usual again, as we see with how he regards Cloud over the course of VII and into AC.
He doesn't give chances blindly or out of sympathy or the simple goodness of his heart. They're very often calculated risks that he's decided, should things go south, can be easily handled or corrected. Again: giving the inmate room to learn and grow by practice, adjusting to mistakes, and maintaining accountability and boundaries.
His perceptiveness will lend to being a good consult with destructive individuals, and will be able to identify likely roots for the habits, but he himself will pair poorly with inmates whose destructiveness is borne of emotional distress. In such cases he's best applied as security or consultation.
He will pair best with inmates that struggle with self confidence or guilt, or inmates that come from rough backgrounds as it is a scene he is extremely familiar and comfortable with. Inmates that will respond best to practice, rather than theory, will mesh naturally with Reno's teaching style. He will be well-paired with inmates stuck in a black-or-white mindset, though it will be rocky. He is well utilized in short-term doses with other inmates that may need a push out of their comfort zone, as Reno will push, but not leave them stranded. He's well suited to dangerous and manipulative inmates, as it's difficult to manipulate him, though be aware Reno may give these types a taste of their own medicine.
Reno would be poorly matched with introspective or sensitive inmates, as Reno can be domineering, and his stronger personality could trample and further frustrate types that struggle with maintaining and setting boundaries or communicating their needs.
Deal:
Reno will lend his abilities in exchange for sanctuary for his teammates. Should Rufus or the other Turks find their self at death's door, he wants them to be guaranteed time here and a second chance at life.

Cloud Strife
Ever since Meteorfall there's been an uneasy truce between the Turks and Cloud, one that Reno finds himself thankful for now that he's isolated from his lifelong partners. It's forced Reno's hand into extending Cloud more trust than he wants to give, but beggars can't be choosers and at least he knows Cloud is an earnest person. In exchange for reliability and to continue reinforcing shaky ground, Reno has been skirting the line of his NDA with ShinRa to answer questions Cloud might have regarding his past.
|
Zack Fair
It was hard looking one of the Turks' most difficult failures in the face, and just as much of a shock seeing a sorely missed face. He was relieved to have someone here whose trust he doesn't question, and as such, Reno didn't miss a beat when it came to falling back into old patterns with a good friend. Being older and wiser, Zack's presence and everything it entails is something Reno makes sure not to take for granted this time around--though(answering for Nibelheim and Platefall aside) he still shows his respects and concerns in his own subtle ways.
|
Tifa Lockheart
Tifa had always seemed the most tolerant of the Turks' presence at the Seventh Heaven back home, which very likely paved the way for the slowly stabilizing truce between the two sides. Reno enjoyed her company and the drinks she could whip up, so coming to Escordvi and finding out she was from a very maligned point in the past where her feelings were much more raw towards the Turks was a terrible surprise. He gives her space, but he tends to mope a lot that he can't drop by the local Seventh Heaven with Rude to grab a drink after work like he's used to.
|
Nanaki / Red XIII
Reno has very little idea how Nanaki actually feels towards him since they almost never cross paths--though understandably so--and he holds no expectations. Should Nanaki still be embittered towards the Turks for having brought him in to Hojo's lab in the first place, he would understand, and not lose sleep over the animosity. While he was curious about Nanaki, the two were never any kind of close.
|
Toge Inumaki
When Reno was put out of commission by a poison dart, Toge sat and stayed with him while he was recovering. It was a small gesture, but with how lonely Reno was without his usual partner, Rude, to check on him, it still meant a lot and left a good impression. The guy was a complete stranger to him, but ever since then, Reno will hang out with Toge when they bump into eachother. He hasn't gotten to see past the thoughtful and tough mask Toge puts on, but that's something that'll come with time.
|
Dongfang Qingcang
Their interactions were brief and professional, but Dongfang's first impression left a strong taste of 'Rufus ShinRa' in his mouth. That, and he found out from the grapevine this guy keeps a lot of academics under his supervision. Reno's opted to stay under Dongfang's umbrella, carrying on his duty as Turk. It may be a devil of a different name, but until observations prove otherwise, Dongfang is still a devil he knows. On the plus side, Reno is so used to harsh personalities and death glares, that Reno brushes most of it off with a laugh.
|
Ranma Saotome
Upcoming! However, Reno has run into Ranma a few times, and with how standoffish the kid is, he absolutely loves being petty and antagonizing Ranma until they get into online pissing matches over absolutely nothing.
|
Satoru Gojo
Upcoming! After a quick chat online, these two decided to get into a permanent game of Where's Waldo tag. Reno's skills as a Turk versus whatever Gojo's talents are--since the guy hasn't divulged that yet.
W/L Counter: 0/1 |
G'raha Tia
Upcoming! Zack Fair's nekomimi boyfriend. Teasing aside, in the few interactions Reno has had with G'Raha, he finds the guy pleasant. A little bit nerdy, and one that easily goes off on excitable tangents for the simple joy of sharing information. He knows little about the guy past that, but being as close as he is to Zack, Reno is pretty lax and chummy with him.

Due to the nature of his job and because he wants/needs to maintain his health, he's extremely particular about partners so as to avoid STDs, children, and baggage.
Bisexual. True switch. Preference for top/bottom and dom/sub based on his mood.
Most easily turned on by provocative sounds, playing with his ears, or talking about making sounds/the sounds reno makes.
Into dirty-talk, but doesn't like degradation or mommy/daddy talk.
Oral fixation, M/F + giving. Loves things in his mouth, and his mouth on things. Not concerned with receiving.
High-risk/low-probability exhibitionist(likes risky situations where it's not likely they'll get caught).
Into edging, choking, multiple orgasms, and using toys/remote toys on partners.
Likes having partners go about their day with toys in them, or letting his partners do the same to him.
Enjoys restraining/tying his partner up. Very familiar with body mechanics and capable of pinning people without restraints during sex. Likes also being restrained, but only by ship-partners
Will try to get away with any and all sex in ShinRa HQ.
Into orgasm control. Prefers being in control. Only enjoys being on receiving end of orgasm control when it's a ship-partner.
Possessive of ship-partners and always leaves many marks on them. Likes the sentiment being returned.
When bottoming/subbing, into cock-warming, but only with ship-partners.
Only with ship-partners, into filling/being filled with cum, holding cum in, ejaculate on backs, chests, etc.
Enjoys letting other people flirt with his ship-partner for a few minutes, then coming in and putting his arms around his partner/kissing them in front of whomever was flirting with his partner. Absolutely insidious brat.
Pressure's rising fast as lightning, they can't stop it now. Enemies circled around me 360, I count 'em 180. Fear is never an option so dying's not a real phobia.

Despite formal training in wrestling, boxing, and martial arts, Reno's scrappy and guerilla tactics betrays his street-fighting roots. Extremely nimble and agile in combat, relying on speed to make up for poor defense. Hits fast and hard. Favors his left side, but is comfortably ambidextrous. Armed to the teeth. Often wears a harness under his coat to hide other weapons.

Veld had an eye for character. He had a way of looking at a piece of coal and seeing the potential in it. He knew how to shake off the dust and cut away the shit until there was something polished where trouble once stood.
That's how the Turks were. A bunch of mercenaries, con-men and convicts--and a couple of disgraced cops thrown in.
The Turks were anointed in the red of ShinRa's ledgers, affording them a unique independence no other branch could tout. Under the leadership of Veld, and later Tseng, they flexed this independence after ShinRa martyred its heroes. They stepped up in their own ways, weaving through loopholes and covering their tracks in ShinRa's systems to keep Midgar and its people safe from the real monsters. It wasn't honest work, but that's just how things had to be.
When ShinRa turned on Veld, the Turks were ready to make their last stand, but a deal had been struck between Rufus and Scarlet: Veld and any Turks not facing down the Infantry's rifles were allowed to retire alive, and the remaining Turks pledged their loyalty and lives to ShinRa. The promise was writ in what was believed to be Veld's blood, and in exchange for maintaining this facade, the Turks rallied around Rufus.
Scarlet thought she kept a tight leash on the remaining Turks, and they didn't give her a reason to think otherwise. But when ShinRa tried to get in Cloud's way, the Turks made sure SOLDIER's living legacy could do what he needed to do.
That's how the Turks were. A bunch of mercenaries, con-men and convicts--and a couple of disgraced cops thrown in.

Paladin, just because I feel like making Reno complain about constantly being surrounded by rules lawyers. Besides, despite his compromises, he's got a set of morals; he's just more of a the-ends-justify-the-means type of person. Plus, he would get absolutely fucking annoyed at how sloppy the Corsairs can be with their business. Reno's used to high-quality shady business. Granted, he'll shamelessly play the fence anyway, but. Y'know.
If the mods want to place him elsewhere, go for it. Bully this mans.

Abilities & Inventory:
Thundaja materia - slotted into Reno's magrod, lets him cast Thundaja. Has complete mastery over it and is extremely disciplined with it. Reno is able to freely use it to electrify his magrod to various voltage settings as needed and can use it to cast lightning bolts. The mana/energy drain of using Thundaja is absolutely negligible/minuscule to Reno and he can use it for literal hours without notice due to his mastery. To nerf this, it will demand higher energy use from him, and receive a major bump down to thundara(equivalent of a nasty taser shock), requiring him to re-achieve his mastery back up to thundaja, which will again allow him to imbue his magrod with more immediately lethal voltage levels.
Comet materia - slotted into Reno's magrod. Lets him cast comet, which is a single-shot flaming projectile, similar to Hell Firaga. The cast- and projectile-speed is quick, taking away greatly from its power. It's equivalent(at best) to a Fira spell. Usually only used for flying targets or to help keep enemies at a distance. Comet will receive a middling nerf in upping the energy drain and back down to a fire-equivalent. Will not bump back up to higher intensity flames, even with practice. This is to keep Reno as a melee fighter that relies on dexterity and agility for survival.
Hastega matera - slotted into Reno's magrod. A newer materia that Reno has very little mastery over, but he uses it to get out of sticky situations, and lets him quickly reposition if needed. He's judicious with its use, and I presume he doesn't have mastery over it. Will still be receiving a nerf by upping the mana/energy drain even more to limit its use to twice a day, which further interferes with his other materia.
Acrobatics - Reno's recognized in canon as being the fastest of the Turks in Before Crisis, we've seen him climb sheer walls in Advent Children, and run circles around Cloud in the VII remake(still eventually got his teeth kicked in though), and even keep pace with one of Sephiroth's remnants for a short while. This man is extremely fast and nimble for a human, with an excellent sense of balance and stamina. He's the glass-canon counterpart to his bruiser partner, Rude. Given this talent isn't at all super-human or augmented, and is used to make up for his poor defense, I won't be nerfing his agility.
Magrod, materia, handgun, multi-tool, knives - Given we see Turks pulling guns out of their coats, and the nature of a Turk's job, I generally presume Reno wears a chest harness under his coat, which holds and conceals those items. Also not a fan of how low-cut his shirt is kept in the VII remake, and I tend to stick more to his Crisis Core design, or the Before Crisis/Crisis Core OVA design.
His phone + spare SIM card. No cell reception. Has a lot of offline information downloaded, and some games. Has all the numbers of the ex-Turks still programmed in his phone and their old group-chats. The games are actually puzzle games with one or two idle match-3 or bubble-pop games. Charger not on him, but he knows how to use his materia to charge it.

Background Information: finalfantasy.fandom
Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someoneโs first impression would be upon meeting them.
First impressions of Reno depend on what act someone catches him in. His default is sociable, witty, relaxed, and mischievous. He's an easy person to get along with, but he has a look on his face that gives the impression he's always up to something.
After scratching just beneath the surface, one finds he can be more than a little shady, and errs towards the anti-hero end of the spectrum. Doing bad things for good reasons(usually). The ease with which he appears to accept his atrocities troubles many, but he doesn't feel a need to explain himself(though he will voice his concerns/opinions, as we see in VII remake and Before Crisis). Those he's close with already know how heavy it weighs on him, and he doesn't want anyone that's not close to him knowing how he really feels about things. We never see him seeking any sort of validation from anyone. He brushes many insults off throughout the series and continues to uphold an appearance of being lazy at his job(when he is, in fact, not, and is canonically only out-performed by Tseng), lending to a tendency to weaponize the reputations he has.
As one gets peeks under each new layer, they tend to swing between trusting him and keeping him at a distance. That is, while they gain some context to who Reno is, it often serves to raise more questions. Extremely competent and a good ally, but difficult to read, thus leading to others not wanting to trust him easily or wholly. Those that are close to him, though, know they can always depend on him.
2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
Loyalty, restlessness, agency, freedom. Reno has a love for getting into things and being a part of things, especially since being a Turk gives him agency in things most people have no knowledge of even being caught up in. He's nosy and curious(as we see with his penchant to gossip), and quick on the uptake of new information(literally the entirety of Before Crisis). Once he's figured one thing out, he's ready to move onto the next thing and get to work.
Underneath that, serving as a foundation, is his loyalty to the Turks.
He doesn't have his own goal in life so much as he just likes parts of his job and will stand by his fellow Turks(whom all act very much as a found-family to eachother in canon, with Veld and Reno specifically almost calling eachother father and son in the On The Way To A Smile novellas) to the ends of the earth, so he'll do what he can to help them. He's shown a readiness to die to an entire platoon of ShinRa infantrymen(him, Rude, Tseng, Veld, and Felicia were literally all at gunpoint, and the Infantry was waiting on Scarlet to give the order to shoot. Reno specifically spoke up, saying that he was ready to go down fighting, until Rufus stepped in), and likewise undermined Heidegger during Before Crisis when Veld was temporarily displaced.
He's not dedicated to whatever bullshit ShinRa is up to(though the deal struck with Rufus means he has obligations to adhere to), but he does like his freedom to achieve an objective by any means(instead of wasting time with red tape), travel on a whim, and get into information no one else has. While his loyalty to ShinRa is dubious, when Veld or Tseng make a call or one of his fellow Turks is in trouble, he's all-in, no hesitation.
3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
Reno can be petty, manipulative, inscrutable, and come off as cold or uncaring when he has to make hard choices, or when discussing things he's had to do for his job. He doesn't want to let people know how it gets to him, and so weaponizes his detachment and people's assumptions of him. A large part of this is necessary for his job--he has to maintain a certain detachment--but a significant portion comes from being secretive and protective of his own emotions. And while it serves him in some ways, it makes it difficult to form significant emotional bonds.
He's of the mind that the-ends-justify-the-means, though we see part of it is out of necessity.
In the VII remake, we see it expanded upon that Reno didn't want to drop the plate, but he understood that if they refused and were subsequently killed for insubordination, no one would be left to stand between ShinRa and the world at large, as it had fallen to the Turks to stand up to ShinRa so many times in the past. If Reno has to sacrifice lives to make sure the world at large survives, then so be it. That's the price he pays. He'll be the bad guy so the heroes can do their job.
We explicitly see Reno regretting his loss to Shears in Before Crisis, which put his fellow Turk, Shotgun, and many other people in danger. We see that Reno spent some weeks after trying to compensate for that one failure, working double-time and trying to do more than any human could ever be capable of to try and make up for his mistake(much to the irritation of the other Turks), rather than just accepting it and moving on. This shows that underneath his facades, Reno holds himself to very high standards, especially with his job, and proves his lackadaisical attitude towards work is just an appearance. It also shows he apologizes through actions rather than words.
We see in Before Crisis and Crisis Core that the Turks literally dropped everything to try and help Zack. They were en-route to Nibelheim to stop AVALANCHE from getting a support materia that would awaken a summon(Zirconiade) whose purpose was to end all life on the planet, but on overhearing that Zack was found in the Midgar wastes, Veld gave the orders to drop everything(which meant putting the rescue of his own daughter on hold for Zack's sake), and try to get him before the infantry could. They failed, and it sat visibly heavy on all their hearts, as they understood what Zack's death meant in the grand scheme of things.
We also see Reno wanting no part in the Nibelheim cover-up(Veld handled the cover-up for the Turks, likely to protect their humanity and keep them from being broken in a way that the Kalm cover-up broke Veld). He abhorred the practice, and it was a sobering moment for Reno and the rest of the Turks that tested their mettle as Turks. That moment set the tone for the rest of his time with ShinRa.
4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
It has long-since been confirmed by FF7 Ultimania that Reno dyes his hair red, but I will die on the hill that his hair is naturally Just That Red. SquareEnix will have to assassinate me theirselves. Reno is good with helicopters! He's an excellent pilot and decent mechanic. Mostly with helicopters, but he has enough generalized knowledge to understand what he's looking at with land vehicles. Reno and Rude are both adrenaline junkies(confirmed by On The Way To A Smile novellas), and Reno in particular likes things that go boom. Reno can and has scaled vertical walls and used the Buster Sword as a platform. This man is agile. Reno and the other Turks all ignored orders and nearly died to the OG AVALANCHE to save the planet and Midgar, they do NOT want to let ShinRa fuck it over. He also really hates that Cloud's gang just fuckin use that name without any respect to all of the things AVALANCHE took from him. Considering Tseng was confirmed to have feelings for Aerith, Veld lost his partner(Vincent Valentine) to Hojo's experiments, that the Turks were fond of Zack and knew him and Aerith were pretty close, and that the Remake confirmed that the Turks were secretly protecting Aerith(by Reno admitting it was a covert op after calling himself her bodyguard), I generally assume the Turks only pretended to apprehend Aerith whenever the Science Department bitched about bringing her into custody, but intentionally failed every time so as to keep her out of Hojo's hands. This can be applied or dropped at the cast and mods' discretion, but I like to give a heads up.
